CS2 has started an after-school computer club for 5th graders at Margaret Beeks Elementary School. In the computer club, we teach the basic hardware components of a computer, web page design using HTML, programming, encryption, and much more. By the end of the year, the students at Beeks Elementary Computer Club will have created a web site that teaches others how to create web pages. Each volunteer usually works with one to two students on completing the objectives of the lesson plan. Once a week volunteers meet with the site coordinator to plan out the upcoming trip's lesson. Following that, volunteers attend the computer club at Beeks Elementary School.
Harding Elementary School
Location: Harding Avenue, Blacksburg, VA
Site Coordinator: Maxwell Lawson (lawsonm)
Times:
Summary:
Harding Elementary School is one of two elementary schools in Blacksburg that CS2 works with. The grades range from kindergarten up to 5th grade. CS2works with a 4th and 5th grade after school club called "Techies". We teach them different computer skills, and currently are running a course on PowerPoint. All of the kids gain something out of this, but at different levels. For some of the kids, this is their only exposure to computers, while others are very computer literate and are able to hone their skills. Harding has its own computer lab, with Pentium 4 Gateway computers. They have all the software and hardware that the kids need, including scanners, projectors, and printers. CS2 members also get a lot out of the site. We get to work with grade school kids, and because it's a club we get to see the same faces each week. All in all, Harding is a great experience for both the Harding kids and CS2 members.
