Newport Community Center
Location: Newport, VA
Site Coordinator: Luke Marrs (lmarrs)
Times: Wednesday 1:30-3:30 PM
Summary:
CS2 is working with the Newport Community Center and the Giles County Technology Center to provide a class to the members of the Newport Community that focuses on teaching the basics of computers. Our weekly class lasts over a period of six to eight weeks. The classes start out teaching the most basic concepts of a computer, slowly building up additional knowledge of programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel. After the basics have been reviewed, the classes are driven by what our students need to learn. We cover topics involving putting information on external media (CDs, flash drives, etc), working with Microsoft PowerPoint to create a presentation, and using the Internet to read and write e-mails. Since the students get to drive the material they learn, the class is a great experience for both the members of the community and the CS2 members.

PCI, sponsored by NSBE (the National Society of Black Engineers) and CEED (the Center for the Enhancement of Engineering Diversity), has asked CS2 to host two workshops for the Computer Science Department.
